How to clean laptop speakers

Laptop speakers sit behind grilles that collect dust from desks, beds and backpacks.

1

Use the built-in speakers

Unplug headphones and disconnect Bluetooth so the sound plays from the laptop itself.

2

Tilt the grilles down

Keep the lid open and tilt the laptop so the grilles face down or to the side.

3

Run Dust shake

Turn the volume up and press Start. The sweep covers the different resonances of larger laptop speakers.

4

Brush and test

Brush the grilles gently, then run Left and Right in the speaker test to check both channels.

Spilled liquid on your laptop? Don’t use any tool yet

A liquid spill on a laptop is different from a wet phone speaker. Liquid can reach the keyboard, battery and logic board, and running anything while it’s wet risks a short circuit.

  • Shut it down right away and unplug the charger.
  • Turn it upside down in a tent shape so liquid drains away from the inside.
  • Leave it to dry for at least a day or two before switching it on.
  • Get it checked if it was sugary or a large amount.

Use this tool afterwards only if the laptop works normally and the speakers still sound muffled.

Tips by laptop type

MacBook

  • Depending on the model, speakers sit beside the keyboard or under the hinge area.
  • Check System Settings, Sound, Output is set to the MacBook speakers.
  • Brush grilles across the holes, never into them.

Windows laptops

  • Many speakers face down from the bottom edge. Use a hard, flat surface while testing.
  • Check Sound settings: output device and turn off audio enhancements while cleaning.
  • Lift the laptop slightly so the bottom grilles aren’t muffled by a blanket.

Laptop speaker questions

It loosens dust in the grilles and in front of the speaker. Larger laptop speakers respond well to the Dust shake sweep, followed by a soft brush.

High, but not distorting. If the laptop speakers start crackling at maximum, back off a few steps.

Sometimes. If crackling stays after cleaning and also happens with quiet audio, check for driver or enhancement settings, then consider a repair.

Yes. Any laptop with a modern browser can run the tool.
