Useful frequencies to try

Type any of these into the frequency box, or drag the slider.

440 Hz

  • Concert A, the standard tuning note for most instruments.

165 Hz

  • The water eject frequency. Pulse it for the classic cleaning pattern.

50 Hz and 60 Hz

  • Mains hum frequencies, handy for spotting electrical hum in audio gear.

1,000 Hz

  • The standard test tone used to check levels and channels.

20 to 100 Hz

  • Deep bass. Phones barely play it; good for testing larger speakers and subwoofers.

8,000 to 17,000 Hz

  • High range. Many adults stop hearing somewhere in here. Keep the volume low.

Sine, square, triangle or saw?

  • Sine is a pure single frequency with no overtones. Best for testing and for cleaning.
  • Square adds strong odd harmonics, so it sounds buzzy and louder at the same level.
  • Triangle sits between sine and square: soft, slightly hollow.
  • Saw contains every harmonic and sounds bright and harsh.

The tool automatically lowers the level of square and saw waves, because they sound much louder than a sine at the same setting.

Use it safely

High frequencies and loud levels tire your ears quickly, especially on headphones. Start low, raise the volume slowly, and take breaks. Turn it off right away if anything sounds uncomfortable.

Tone generator questions

Yes. Drag the slider or type a new value and the tone glides to it. You can also switch waveform and pulsing live.

The browser generates the exact frequency you set. What you hear also depends on your speaker, which may not reproduce very low or very high tones.

Most adults lose the top of their hearing range with age, and many phone and laptop speakers roll off at very high frequencies too.

For the cycle length you pick: 30, 60 or 90 seconds. Press Stop at any time.
