Can a website clean the call speaker?

Browsers send sound to the phone’s main loudspeaker. Whether the earpiece plays too depends on the phone:

  • Stereo phones use the earpiece as the second speaker. That includes iPhone 7 and later and most recent Galaxy and Pixel phones. The tone reaches the earpiece, so sound cleaning helps.
  • Single-speaker phones keep the earpiece for calls only. The tone can’t reach it, so hand cleaning is the way to go.

Not sure which you have? Open the speaker test, play Left and Right, and hold the top of the phone near your ear. If you hear the tone there, your earpiece is a speaker.

How to clean the earpiece

Earpiece grilles collect skin oil and makeup as well as dust, so a brush does a lot of the work.

1

Check it plays

Use the speaker test as described above to see if your earpiece plays sound.

2

Run Gentle mode

If it does, hold the phone with the earpiece facing down, away from your ear, and press Start.

3

Brush the mesh

Brush the slot gently with a soft, dry toothbrush to lift oil and lint.

4

Test on a real call

Call someone or your voicemail and listen at normal volume.

Other reasons calls sound quiet

If the earpiece looks clean, check these before booking a repair.

Screen protector or case

  • A protector or case lip may be covering the earpiece slot.
  • Remove it and test a call.

Call volume is separate

  • Press volume up during a call; it doesn’t follow media volume.

Bluetooth is connected

  • Calls may be routed to earbuds or a car. Turn Bluetooth off and retry.

Weak signal

  • Poor reception sounds muffled too. Try Wi-Fi calling or another spot.

Earpiece cleaning dos and don’ts

Do

Use a soft, dry brush

Brush across the slot rather than into it.

Try low-tack putty lightly

Press it on the outside of the grille and lift straight off.

Keep the phone away from your ear

The cleaning tone is loud. Never hold it against your ear while it plays.

Don’t

Poke the slot

Pins and toothpicks can tear the fine mesh.

Use alcohol or liquid

It can seep through and damage the earpiece.

Blow air in up close

Compressed air pushes debris further in.

Call speaker questions

Music usually plays from the bottom loudspeaker, while calls use the earpiece. A clogged earpiece mesh, a covered slot or Bluetooth routing are the usual causes.

Yes, used in Gentle mode and held away from your ear. The earpiece is small, so avoid Deep clean on it.

Only on phones that use the earpiece as a stereo speaker. On others the tone plays from the bottom speaker only.

Restart the phone and test with Bluetooth off and no case. If it’s still quiet, the earpiece may need replacing.
